Blues Music Times of Rev. Gary Davis and his Ragtime Guitar
The Blues Music Times of Reverend Gary Davis could possibly have begun at the turn of the 19th century.
Born in South Carolina, Gary Davis is said to have begun playing guitar by the age of 7 years old.
It is also said that he played with a string-band for a time.
You can hear on some of his recordings that he was also a master at playing the Banjo, so this might corroborate the string-band theory.
He is said to have been influenced to play Cocaine Blues and Candyman by a mysterious traveling blues musician called Porter Irvin.
However, Davis is said to have referred to that style of picking as “old-fashioned pickin'”, and ‘looked down his nose at it.’
